Glory Road

Based on the true story of how just an ordinary college team from Texas goes all the way to bring in the greatest upset in NCAA history, this is one hell of a watch. Set in the background of 60's when the coloured players were not as part of the basketball we know today, this movie highlights the hugely important tournament that helped generation of basketball players from the minorities to the pinnacle of glory. The Texas Western College recruits a new coach for the team which is in tatters and it's this coach who expresses his desire to bring in coloured players into the team. The management is sceptical initially but lets him go his way. Upsets after upsets, Texas fights the humiliation and immense racism and wins the tournament. Emotional as it can get and inspirational at the same time, a lovely movie to watch.

What Happens in Vegas

With a simple yet different storyline, this happens to be one of those romantics which is promising. Not something extremely remarkable, the story emphasizes something important in today's world. Jack is a carefree bachelor who does not care much for a serious lifestyle, nor for a serious relationship. Joy, on the other hand is a matured, well organised woman. Both suffer some stress and that is when each of them makes plans for going to a vacation to Las Vegas, each accompanied by his/her friend. Jack and Joy meet under humorous circumstances, get intoxicated heavily and get married in a day! However, Jack wins a Triple Jackpot with a coin which belonged to Joy and now they each have a claim. To sort that out, they seek judicial help but the judge order them to 6 months strict marriage and a counsellor to monitor them. Each initially pretends to be good and happily married to end the 6 months but things don't go as planned and they fall in love. Good movie to watch when you are in love.

Wake Up Sid

The story of the usual spoilt rich dad's son, who does not know what real hardwork is, who slowly finds out how this cruel world runs. Sid, the main character, initially, always has time for parties and enjoyment but does not have any intention of joining his father's firm as a trainee. One day his last exam's results are out and he discovers that he has failed in clearing it. There is a fiasco at his home that evening and he has a very heated argument with his parents and decides to leave his home to stay at a girl's place. It is this girl, who, with the help of Sid, has settled in Mumbai. The girl, though initially being composed with her behaviour, slowly freaks outs over a period of time, becomes tired of Sid's spoilt characteristics. Fiascos continue and Sid realises what he needs to do. He tries to improve and get his feet on the ground. Lovely screenplay, definitely worth a watch.

Invictus

This one is a stunner. Morgan Freeman is at his usual class. Story of South African rugby team which wins the World Cup in 1995. A team which was not supported by the locals because it represented mainly whites. This was the complex situation when the World cup was going to be held. The way the then president Mandela (Freeman) uses this opportunity to unite the blacks and the whites of SA and sends the message to the world is the theme of the movie. Mandela sends the rugby team for a visit to the island where Mandela and others were imprisoned. That is when the captain of the team realises and inspires from. A hugely motivational story of a leader to unite the people of the country and emotional display of passion and determination for the land. Watch out for the recitation of the poem 'Invictus' in the background. Must see. I feel it deserved at least 4 Academy Awards.

Hurt Locker

Intense situations, lots of action and drama and sentiments of the US Marines on the very ground zero: that is basically it from the movie. Nothing too unusual in the movie. Anyone who has seen Jarhead,Enemy at the gates,Saving Private Ryan and such war movies, would find this flick quite similar. The new thing is probably the story of a bomb squad, which I have not seen being depicted in a movie previously. There is a situation when, during a bomb deactivation operation, a stray car comes in close proximity of the area. It creates a really tense situation! Similarly another situation worth mentioning is, when a couple of marines keep a stray enemy building at close watch and there is long range gun fight. The soldiers dont loose the sight of the slightest movement in the building for hours and at the end of it, the exhaustion shows. Again, one of the marines come back for a break in US and do the usual jobs of a household, talks to his child and talks about his feelings..the scene imparts the emotional side of the marine. Overall, good movie but Oscar winner? I don't quite agree.

Watchmen

The movie is one of the strangest I have seen.  If you are expecting a typical superhero movie, be ready to be caught unexpected. This is nothing like the Fantastic 4 movie. The theme is based on the background of the Cold War, where world is expecting to be ended in a nuclear war in the 80's. There were these old school superheroes from the 40's that formed a team then, now they are living their individual dormant lives. Suddenly one of the erstwhile superhero is murdered and then slowly the others recollect. Eventually, the straight men amongst the team gear up for some action and they are on a mission to identify the killer. The cold war keeps running in the background as a part of the parallel story. After some chain of events, the climax is reached where it is discovered that there is a sinister yet necessary evil plan plotted by a section of the old team to restore peace. In between all this, there are thousands of abstract scenes and events. This is a good watch but recommended to be viewed individually and NOT with women; girls would not like the gore and abstractness.

P.S. I love you

Adaptations work out, yes I believe so. Not having being read the novel, I feel the movie has a lot of feelings in itself. A perfect movie for the romantics, it involves the great love of an Irish man for his love as he was detected with brain tumour. He writes letters for his wife to get her through her grief. He even plans out a holiday for the lady, taking his mother in law into confidence. For the wife, it is largely a mystery as to how the man was able to make the letters get delivered and make the tour plan so much in advance but the lady stops thinking and gets involved in the guiding ways of the letters. She rediscovers how much she loves him still now but at the same time, she also finds the motivation from the letters to get up going and to carry on living her life. Nice watch with your partner, especially after you have had a bad fight.
